Tracing desire, con’t.

yellow-umbrella-tree The image at left is a found one: I forget how i found it, for that matter. However, it seems to have definite metaphorical possibilities, especially given the current discussion on this blog:

intersection of human need, ineffectually met, for protection

nature’s dictated place– by humans– as mute scaffolding: one can only hope that the first good wind will knock those things out. Failing that, one hopes that the leaves in spring can embrace the umbrellas– at least it’s pretty to think so.

But, this is a good way to start thinking about how to give shape–trace out the movements– of desire in society at large: a tree with umbrellas in this case is just a tree with umbrellas, but it could be more.

The image at right is a picture from a biomedical supply company, brought up when I searched “propagation”: you can trace the movement of chemicals at the cellular level: that seems to me at present to be the easiest metaphor for the movement of this particular economic crisis: mindless, largely repetitive although occasionally adaptive movement of capital through unselfconscious channels. And, like capital and its channels, both chemical and cell are often changed during the event.

Cellular stuff seems like a good idea– but perhaps its not the most intuitively obvious image. It has deep resonances for me, but it still needs work.
